PERTH mining magnate Andrew "Twiggy" Forrest has challenged James Packer’s right to the crown of Australia’s richest person after the soaring share price of his Fortescue Metals Group boosted the Perth iron ore billionaire’s wealth to $7.26 billion.
With Fortescue’s share price soaring 8.1% yesterday, Mr Forrest’s 1 billion shares gained an extra $544 million in value, to push his wealth past $7 billion for the first time.
Mr Forrest’s soaring wealth could now eclipse that of Mr Packer, whose worth was measured at $7.25 billion earlier this year in BRW’s annual list of Australia’s wealthiest people.
Since then, Mr Packer’s gambling and media empire has been restructured and there has been no update on his estimated wealth.
Mr Forrest’s rampaging fortune did not escape the attention of the Australian Securities Exchange, which queried Fortescue over its rapid share price appreciation - from $5.75 last week to around $7.06 yesterday.
Fortescue shares ended trading at $7.20 yesterday, to value Fortescue at $20.2 billion.
The Pilbara mining aspirant, which expects to load its first iron ore onto ships at Port Hedland in May, said it did not know what triggered the price run over the past week.
But it comes amid the backdrop of a looming BHP Billiton bid for Rio Tinto, driven by BHP’s desire to combine the two miners’ Pilbara iron ore operations to create a 600 million tonnes-a-year mega-business, and the annual global iron ore pricing talks.
Analysts expect the talks, between the leading iron ore producers BHP, Rio and Brazil’s Vale - with steel mills in Japan and China - to lead to an increase of up to 50% in next year’s iron ore prices.
BHP’s hostile merger overtures to Rio have triggered a fresh bout of takeover frenzy in the mining sector.
Fortescue has repeatedly been referred to as a potential takeover target for Chinese or Russian steel interests. But any bid would depend on the support of Mr Forrest, whose stake equates to 36% of the company’s equity.
The ASX price query comes just a week after Fortescue carried out a one-for-10 share split. It was designed to ensure that its runaway share price, having soared from just over $10 a year ago to more than $60, would not become too expensive for retail investors.
Adjusted to reflect the share split, Fortescue was trading at $1.33 a year ago and 72 cents, or one-tenth of yesterday’s close, just 18 months ago. Mr Forrest could not be reached for contact.
I really had a pleasing, nice and satisfying new job. It may be a very unbending one but however, the hardships have been empowered by fulfillment. I always had this routinely work. I always woke up in the morning for my daily exercise, then, I prepare my things for work. Honestly, I got really a tiring work. To nurture the minds of children is a very challenging job. It may sometimes if not all the time so tiring but after all those jobs, I always got relieved after the class especially when they got so much lessons learned. It is a continuing task I should say and even if I always get tempted to get away from this complicated work, I also always end up seeing myself going back to where I have gone. It is not really a clamor but just a reality check that I earned less than how much effort I have given. I always got this very low net in salary during paydays and it sometimes makes me frustrated. Good thing I always manage to get a no credit cash loans. I am really thankful for the different blessings that I am receiving right now and that I always see to it that I can manage everything with all my might.
Kangaroos are native to the Australian continent and to parts of Papua New Guinea. Most species are only found in Australia.
There are over 60 different species of kangaroo and their close relatives. All kangaroos belong to the super-family Macropodidae (or macropods, meaning ‘great-footed’).
The macropod family includes kangaroos, wallabies, wallaroos, pademelons, tree-kangaroos and forest wallabies. These species are also found in Papua New Guinea. Species in the macropod family vary greatly in size and weight, ranging from 0.5 kilograms (1.1 pounds) to 90 kilograms (200 pounds). The Potoroinae (potoroid) family of kangaroos includes the potoroo, bettong and rat-kangaroo. This family of kangaroos lives only in Australia.
Kangaroos of different types live in all of the diverse areas of Australia, from cold-climate rainforests and desert plains to tropical areas.
Life is really unpredictable. We can not really know what would happen next. I have been working out at the gym for a week now because I have this notation to myself that I should change my lifestyle. It may not be easy but I should have to. Mind you, this is not an easy job. I have to wake up early in the morning to get myself ready for my daily workout. After which, I will go directly to the gym and start my routines and exercises. It may seem too easy to see people jogging, walking through treadmills, carrying heavy metals and the like but do you know that I can not even manage to see myself walking through treadmills in more than 5 minutes. It is true, it is not that easy. I got even so amused during my first day. I was told by the trainer to get myself on treadmills for 15 min. I was thinking if he was just joking because I cam to workout work an hour and he will just let me go over it for 15 minutes. Anyways, I did tried and mind you, I have proven that I can not even last for 6 minutes. Yes, when you work out, your first task is to fight against yourself and the fats that you have bank inside your body. Now, I am reaping what I have sowed and I should take it whole-heartedly. What I can say is this: It is better to get yourself life insurance whether you have felt the degradation or not.
